Ever wonder why dessert is served after dinner?

That's easy, it's because dessert is the only dish you can eat even if you are not hungry any more :)

It is because the word comes from the French "desservir" meaning to clear away, and originally referred to the nuts and sweetmeats that were put on the table after the main dishes dishes were cleared.
Although I prefer Marie's explanation!

Thanks for your comments. The Old Foodie is correct! Although Marie's answer was very insightful into the human psyche. Dessert sure I just finished a buffet, but why not. LOL.

Its not because of the words meaning, that's like saying cars that are manual are made like that because they are called automatic. Its the other way round. Dessert is served after dinner as in the old English culture of having something after dinner to clear the palette, (probably to clear bad breath after smelly food as well). This food was only meant to be a refresher for the mouth. This is why you eat such unhealthy and non-nutritious food after a meal.
